Be Still

Be still within, be calm.
Do not try to overdrive your life.
Be calm, do your work quietly;
live as the flowers live,
opening your heart
to the sunshine of God's love.

Leisurely

A hurried mountain stream
leisurely making its way
toward reunion with its source.
Nothing deters or disturbs such a stream.
Faced with obstacles,
it does not resist or give up resentfully,
but rather, resolutely and peacefully
finds a way to continue its journey.

May 20, 2011 Chautauqua

From the Editor's Computer

   People used to walk everywhere, and long distances at that.  In a biography of the Alcott family (Lousia Alcott is the author of “Little Women”), I read that Mr. Alcott would set out to walk to the house of his friend, Ralph Waldo Emerson.  The distance that he rambled along?  Roughly 45 kms, or the distance between Alix (or Mirror) and Lacombe.

   No wonder people are not as fit as they used to be.  In our quest to make life easier with labour saving devices (that includes vehicles), society has lost its health.  The daily round used to consist of lots of physical activity.  What does it consist of now?

Weather

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing,
wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating;
there is no such things as bad weather,
only different kinds of good weather.

May 6, 2011 Chautauqua

From the Editor's Computer

   Along with many people around the world, I watched, with enjoyment, the much-anticipated wedding last week of Prince William and Catherine (Kate) Middleton.

   There was lots of pomp and pageantry - I was glad to see the weather cooperated so they could depart from the Abbey in the open landau.  There was formality - though most of that was due to it being an Anglican wedding service in Westminster Abby.

   Many commentators remarked on how “genuine” the couple appeared.  While it was a “Royal” wedding, we need to remember that when they said “I will,” and exchanged their vows, William and Kate were no different than any other young couple joining their lives together.  Many blessings to the couple!

Surprise

Man is always more than he can know of himself;
consequently, his accomplishments, time and again,
will come as a surprise to him.

Each Day

Unless each day can be looked back upon
by an individual as one in which he has had
some fun, some joy, some real satisfaction,
that day is a loss.
